Software-defined media transport for resilient live IP workflows

VX enables resilient live IP workflows by extending Appear into the software-defined domain—connecting sites and cloud without compromising latency or reliability.

Broadcasters are under pressure to connect more sites, move processing closer to where it creates value, and introduce cloud and datacentre compute without compromising the reliability and low latency that live production demands. VX is designed to solve that tension by extending Appear into the software-defined part of the workflow – so customers no longer need one vendor on the ground and another in the cloud.

Platform Overview

Hybrid workflow-based architecture

VX is Appear’s software-defined media platform for the next generation of live IP production. VX Media Gateway delivers robust stream interfacing and transport resilience, workflow-level control, deep observability, and deployment flexibility across cloud, private infrastructure, and edge compute.

Rather than treating software as a separate island, VX is designed to work seamlessly with Appear’s X hardware platform so customers can build one hybrid operating model across contribution, processing, and distribution.

Resilient ip designs

Resilient transport gateway

Supports UDP/RTP, MPEG transport stream workflows, Advanced SRT, SMPTE ST 2022-7 seamless protection, and A/B failover for robust contribution and distribution paths.

Regional contribution hub

API-first operations

Everything available in the UI is also exposed through the API, enabling automation, orchestration, and deeper integration into customer workflows.

Entire platform view

Observable by design

Prometheus metrics, built-in Grafana dashboards, workflow live views, and alarms at system, workflow, and workflow-step level simplify monitoring and fault isolation.

Hybrid deployment flexibility

Runs on commodity Linux hardware, private cloud VMs, and public cloud instances using the same workflow model and software stack.

Visual Workflow Control

A visual workflow editor and a structured internal media transport model let teams build simple or complex signal paths around event-specific requirements.

USE CASES

VX use cases across
the live media workflow

From contribution to distribution, VX enables flexible, resilient workflows across cloud, on-prem, and hybrid environments.

Frequently asked questions

What is Appear VX?

Appear VX is Appear’s software-based media transport and processing platform for cloud, datacentre, and software-defined live workflows.

The current VX release is centered on transport-gateway functions such as UDP/RTP, SRT, ST 2022-7 seamless protection, A/B failover, monitoring, alarms, and workflow-based routing.

VX is designed to run on physical servers, virtual machines, and public-cloud instances. The current deployment model includes a single server for the transport-gateway function.

VX is an OPEX-licensed platform with a base VX license per instance and function licenses layered on top. The initial transport-gateway function is licensed by TS connection, with future licenses planned for more advanced processing functions.

VX is “not just another SRT gateway.” It complements the X Platform, shares interoperability with Appear transport and codec functions, supports API-first workflows, and is built toward a broader hybrid production model rather than a single protocol-conversion role.
